You should assume that any home built before 1978 contains some lead-based paint. About 75% of homes built before 1978 contain some lead-based paint. The older the home, the more likely it is to contain lead-based paint.

  • Have your home tested for lead. Before any home improvement project begins, whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or have hired a contractor, you need to know if there is lead-based paint present in your home, specifically the area work is being performed in.
  • Hire only certified lead-safe renovators. If you live in a home built before 1978 and your contractor is performing any work that will disturb more than  ONE square foot of painted surfaces inside or outside your home – replacing a window, installing cabinets, replacing carpet, room addition – the contractor is required by law to be trained as a Lead Safe Renovator and certified by the Iowa Department of Public Health.  This includes any trade that will come into contact with a painted surface inside or outside of your home.
